Sensor-controlled dry feeding system, animal-friendly pens, optimum pig climate control
New house with pig equipment for piglet rearing inaugurated

The agricultural cooperative Uchtdorf based in Uchtdorf (Tangerhütte) in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, invested in a new house for piglet rearing. The main reasons: an increase in piglet production and a desire for improved energy efficiency. Moreover, the constructor attached great importance to animal-friendly housing conditions for the 2,300 weaners. 200 guests used the opportunity of an open house to see the outstanding result and the Big Dutchman pig equipment used in the new house. Main contractor was the agricultural building company Danbauer GmbH.
Sensor-controlled dry feeding system
The agricultural cooperative keeps approximately 650 productive sows. After weaning, the piglets are moved to the new house. A total of eight compartments with nine pens each are available there. The constructor decided to install a multi-phase feeding system. The advantages are obvious: As the feed mixture can be adapted individually to the piglets’ growth, the pigs receive exactly the mixture they need from the very beginning.
The sensor-controlled dry feeding system DryExactpro has been installed in the new house in Uchtdorf. The system transports each mixture to the correct feed valve while the mixer is already preparing the next feeding. A sensor in the automatic feeder checks when the trough is empty. Only then is new feed dispensed. This saves feeding costs and is easy on the cooperative’s purse. The computer-controlled dry feeding system can be completely integrated into the state-of-the-art BigFarmNet control software.
Especially animal-friendly piglet rearing
The new house for piglet rearing was constructed in accordance with Saxony-Anhalt's criteria for an “especially animal-friendly keeping of livestock” and thus exceeds the current requirements of Animal Protection Law. More room and a total of three different kinds of toys are available to the piglets. These toys are attached to a rocker providing further entertainment in the pens.
The pens consist of two areas with different climates and guarantee a breezy move from the farrowing pens to the piglet house. The resting area takes up a third of the total pen space, while the other thirds are used for activities and defecating, respectively. All piglets have room for resting and are protected from drafts. The lying area is heated and additionally equipped with a cover. When the piglets are moved in, the compartment temperature – and thus the temperature in the other two pen areas – amounts to 22 °C. This temperature is then lowered in accordance with the growing piglets’ requirements so that they experience a climate which is always a good fit for their age. Another welcome plus factor: The variable use of energy has a positive effect on the heating costs.
Equipment for pig climate control
Fresh air enters the compartments via the Big Dutchman ceiling inlets CL 1500. The inlet flap opens and steers the flow of the incoming fresh air by downward pull. The air flow is always guided along the ceiling, whether the inlet is opened fully or only sightly, and mixes with the house air while it is sinking. This prevents drafts. The exhaust air leaves the house via exhaust air chimneys installed in the ceiling. On hot days, the inside temperature can additionally be lowered by some degrees thanks to a high-pressure cooling system.
Danbauer GmbH was responsible for the whole project, from planning and construction to equipment. The building experts from Waren (Müritz) in Germany are a well-known, competent and reliable partner of the equipment supplier in Vechta.

Tropical climate-proof equipment drives Venvi Agro’s performance
Efficient pig climate control systems for Philippine sow farm

The Northern Philippines experience very hot temperatures and pounding typhoons each year – not ideal conditions for raising pigs. Venvi Agro’s 2,400 sow farm in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte Province, however, has managed to get around nature by putting their animals in environmentally controlled houses and has begun to reap awards. The pig climate control systems for one of the most modern farms in the country have been supplied by Big Dutchman.
Venvi Agro’s remarkable performance, noted PIC manager Dr. Adrian Carlos, can be attributed largely to the type of housing in the farm. “We are really seeing good numbers here and the main reason for that is the climate controlled housing”, he said. “All our multiplier units are using the same genetics and the same nutrition, and many of our other units are performing very well. However, with Venvi Agro’s tunnel ventilated housing, the pigs have really been able to express their genetic potential.” (…)

New house for pig rearing
Innovative liquid feeding system – healthy piglets

In the course of succession of generations, Ursula and Hubert Lamping from Essen/Oldenburg in Germany recently decided to invest in a new house for pig rearing. The couple has 500 sows and in the long run wants to produce piglets in a closed system. The new house for 2,100 animals was equipped with a pig feeding system, pig equipment and pig house ventilation by Big Dutchman. At the recommendation of another farmer, the Lamping family decided in favor of the HydroAir liquid feeding system equipped with innovative compressed air technology.
„We have planned the farm extension together with our junior. He will get in the farm after his agricultural training“, explained Hubert Lamping his decision to build a new pig rearing house. Before, part of the produced piglets was sold while the rest was reared and finished directly on the farm. After the expansion, the baby piglets will move to the new house of a size of 32 x 36 meters. It has three compartments of 700 animal places each and is ideally suited for the piglet batches produced on this farm.
HydroAir liquid feeding for pig rearing
The advantages of a Big Dutchman sensor feeding system especially designed for pig rearing are obvious: Since HydroAir is operating with compressed air, the feed is transported to the trough and metered out without residues, and the feed lines remain free. As a result this means optimum hygienic rearing conditions and healthy piglets.
The HydroAir liquid feeding system allows mixing and metering out very small quantities of feed. In the beginning of rearing, piglets are fed six to eight times a day; in the end, frequency is raised up to twelve times. During the first three to four weeks, warm liquid feed is supplied to the piglets allowing high feed intake right from the start. Other advantages of HydroAir are that the feed mix can be adjusted accurately to the piglets’ nutrient requirements as well as providing a gradual change of the feed mix (phase feeding). Besides pig rearing, Big Dutchman liquid feeding can be ideally applied when feeding sows.

Call-Inn : “Impressive price-performance ratio”
Electronic sow feeding system with 25 % price advantage

Big Dutchman electronic sow feeding systems (ESF) have an excellent reputation among sow producers. Now the German housing equipment supplier from Vechta-Calveslage has added a new ESF station to its product range: Call-Inn is ideally suited for small sow production units or large units with fixed groups – with a price advantage of 25% compared to similar systems.
Professional pig producers as Frank Böckmann from the northern German town of Essen (Oldenburg), for example, are thrilled: “This new electronic sow feeding station really has an impressive price-performance ratio”, says the farm manager who has kept his gilts in a fixed group feeding them with the Call-Inn since the beginning of 2012. Böckmann is also taken with the automatic feed metering unit. The new, electro-pneumatically driven metering mechanism comes with a reduced number of electric components and therefore requires less power consumption than comparable devices.
Electronic sow feeding system CallMatic Pro
The Böckmann Farm produces in a closed system and has long since been prepared for the new EU directive concerning the keeping of pregnant sows in groups: already in 2011 the waiting area was equipped with the Big Dutchman electronic sow feeding system CallMatic Pro. “I have not regretted this decision one second”, confirms Böckmann.
Both ESF systems, CallMatic Pro and Call-Inn, can be integrated 100 % in the modern BigFarmNet control system. The new Big Dutchman ESF station does not have an extra selection unit and can therefore easily be managed and is also designed for easy self-assembly. The system can ideally be used in older pig houses. The low-tech feeding station allows for economic individual feeding of sows kept in groups.
The Call-Inn electronic sow feeding station is now available. Interested sow producers who would like to experience the Call-Inn first hand are welcome to take a closer look at the feeding station in practical use. Your are also invited to visit us at the Big Dutchman stand at EuroTier 2012 from 13-16 November 2012 in Hannover: Hall 11, Stand D21.

Romania: Big Dutchman reconstructed 23 houses from scratch
Sow management of 2,600 animals in a closed system

For more than 20 years already, Big Dutchman has supported pig farmers in post-socialist Europe in reconstructing outdated production units. Recently also in Roman in the East of Romania. The company Suinprod S.A. Roman of the Kosarom group entrusted the pig equipment supplier from Vechta in Germany with the extensive reconstruction of a sow management farm for 2,600 animals.
This impressive project has now been completed and the company plans for producing an annual 75,000 finishing pigs in a closed system. Big Dutchman Pig Equipment GmbH was responsible for the pig equipment installed. The supply of the buildings including site supervision was organized by the Polish general contractor Agricon Spólka z o.o. belonging to the Big Dutchman group of companies.
A big compliment
In 2008, the pig equipment supplier Big Dutchman Pig Equipment GmbH has already been working for Suinprod when it equipped a farm for the reproduction of 650 gilts. With remarkable success, as the follow-up order shows: the company now had to equip the impressive number of 23 new houses in Romania. The farm was officially opened with a ceremonial act in presence of numerous guests as well as representatives of the EU commission and the Romanian department of agriculture. Neculai Apostol, the founder of Kosarom and current majority shareholder of the group of companies, also attended the inauguration.
Modern sow management in Roman
All houses from the service center to the farrowing area and through to the construction of buildings for rearing and finishing have been equipped with the ultra-modern pig equipment and pig feeding systems from Vechta in Germany. Moreover, the Romanian company is well-prepared for the new EU guideline on livestock husbandry.
According to this guideline, pregnant sows may only be kept in groups as from 1st January 2013 onwards and the waiting area has to be equipped entirely with single stalls. Up to 40 sows can be housed in one pen. All sows within a group have a separate feeding place where they can eat without being interrupted so that aggression during feeding is avoided.
The construction experts
The Big Dutchman subsidiary Agricon Spólka z o.o. is one of the leading general contractors for the planification and realization of livestock houses. Besides concept and implementation of new projects of any dimension one of the most important tasks of Agricon Spólka are extensive reconstruction projects as the one in Roman.
