Hungary: inauguration of the new office building and warehouse of Aliter-P

Hungarian Big Dutchman representative office is expanding

No matter whether he visits the German Big Dutchman headquarters or his Hungarian customers: Gábor Peresztegi is a well-known expert for Big Dutchman housing equipment as well as a reliable partner for constructive team work. Just recently, the long-time sales representative of the world’s leading housing equipment supplier and owner of Aliter-P Kft. has created a wide base for his business activities – in the truest sense of the word:

The new office building and warehouse of Aliter-P was recently inaugurated in the Hungarian city of Bábolna, located approximately 80 km south of Vienna. With approximately 1,100 square metres of office space, show room and warehouse the team of Aliter-P Kft. now has ample space for the marketing and distribution of top modern pig equipment.

Hungarian government sends representative

The ceremony was attended by friends, business partners and government officials. Member of parliament and government representative Dr. Judit Bertalan-Czunyiné conveyed the congratulations of the Hungarian government and participated in the festivities as did Szépe Ferenc, head of department of the department of agriculture.

Peresztegi
thanked all his guests for the manifold support that he had received during the realisation of the impressive project. He also commented on the more than 15 years of partnership with Big Dutchman: “the all-encompassing team work has contributed tremendously to our success”, thanked Peresztegi Sales Manager Daniel Bartels who had traveled to Hungaria from the BD headquarters in Germany.

After the official ceremony, the host invited everyone to join him on a tour through the new buildings. Especially well-perceived was the generous, light-flooded office building with its state-of-the-art work stations. The prestigious show room on the other hand gave the visitors a “tangible” impression of the Big Dutchman product portfolio: “as is true Hungarian custom, we ask everyone to touch and try out the equipment”, invited Peresztegi his guests.

The long-time Big Dutchman partner is firmly established on the Hungarian market for pig production equipment. The pig production expert has not only substantial expertise in the area of pig management but also a lot of experience with integrated projects and provides excellent service. If requested, Peresztegi and his team will support customers with the drafting of business plans or provide assistance for the application process for tenders and EU programs. The reconstruction of old production units from the socialist area is another area of expertise of the company.

Decentralized exhaust air washer HelixX: exhaust air treatment with favourable energy consumption

For many pig producers in regions with a high livestock density, the retrofittable Big Dutchman-system for exhaust air treatment HelixX is often the only solution to qualify for a permit for the expansion of an existing farm.

With a new version of its decentralized exhaust air washer HelixX, the world’s leading livestock housing equipment supplier once again landed a great success, especially in regard to optimized energy consumption. This is also confirmed quite impressively by the latest Signum-Test carried out by the German Agricultural Society (DLG).

Exhaust air treatment with favourable energy consumption

The new HelixX version was officially certified end of January 2012. With an approximately twice as high exhaust air flow of 17,500 m3/h it achieves such favourable energy consumption values that, according to Big Dutchman product manager Andreas Kerssens,” it is now - in addition to the lower initial investment costs inherent to its functional principle - a true alternative to the more complex external central exhaust air washers when taking the affordable operating costs into consideration as well. The increasing demand for HelixX is a good indicator that this is the case more and more.”

Excellent separation rates for total dust and ammonia

HelixX is the only exhaust air washer on the market that does not need any filling material and therefore involves much reduced maintenance requirements and costs. The decentrally-installed system for exhaust air treatment also has excellent separation rates for total dust and ammonia. The results published in the DLG report speak for themselves: emission of total dust is reduced by 85%, and ammonia emission is reduced by 87.5 %.

“In addition to improving the energy consumption values, we have also been able to further improve the ammonia separation rate” confirms Kerssens.

Exhaust air washer HelixX: simple design, reliable operation

The exhaust air washer basically consists of a nozzle holder installed on top of a water collection spiral. Water is sprayed on the exhaust air through the nozzles thus binding dust and ammonia. The decentrally-installed HelixX units are connected to each other and to a central water treatment station by means of a pipeline system.

Each HelixX operates independently. This way the operating costs, for example power costs for the recirculation of the wash water, can be reduced to a minimum.

Exhaust air washer continues to work in the event of power failure

The operational reliability is also guaranteed: in case of a power failure, the natural thermal in the chimney ensures that part of the stale house air is still removed from the house. Due to the possible decentralized arrangement of the HelixX units, the fire protection flaps in the exhaust air collection channels required by law in some German districts are rendered superfluous.

„Big Dutchman family will always remember Jack De Witt”

Big Dutchman co-founder passes away at age 100

Jack DeWitt, who founded Big Dutchman in 1938 with his brother, Dick DeWitt, passed away at his home in Zeeland, USA, on January 6th, 2012.  While Jack was only 24 days away of turning 101, Big Dutchman, now a worldwide leader in automated poultry and swine production systems, is almost ready to celebrate its 75th birthday. Jack DeWitt and his brother Dick DeWitt founded the company in 1938 in the U.S. when they set out to market their invention, which would soon revolutionize the poultry industry.

The “Big Dutchman” automated poultry feeder was the first automatic feeding system, featuring the flat chain concept, which remains the most popular poultry feeding technology in the world today. As Dick loved to tell, “we had a pretty good idea that sure beat shoveling out bird feed by hand. We just had to take it out to the rest of the world”.

Jack and his brothers were the sons of Dutch immigrants who settled on a farm near Holland, Michigan. After graduating from College and returning from the service, Jack joined his brother Dick to run a poultry and hatchery business in Zeeland. Here they designed and developed and began the production of the automated poultry feeder.

By the early 1950s, Big Dutchman established itself in the U.S. and was determined to establish plants and sales forces in their Netherlands homeland and other European countries. By 1958, they added a sales representative in Germany, a young farmer named Joseph Meerpohl, who would later become sole owner of Big Dutchman. After numerous overseas trips and earning several awards and federal recognition for his contributions to foreign trade, Jack sold his interest in the company in 1968. He went on to be a community leader with many organizations and responsibilities.

Today, Big Dutchman globally is headed by Josef’s son, Bernd Meerpohl and head-quartered in Vechta, Germany with over 2,000 employees and subsidiaries on every continent. Bernd had been able to meet Jack when he and Clovis Rayzel (president of Big Dutchman Inc.) came to celebrate Jack DeWitt’s 100th birthday.

On January 29th of 2011, hundreds of family and friends turned out at an open house birthday celebration in Jack’s hometown, Zeeland, just a few miles away from Big Dutchman USA, which he began almost 75 years ago. The “Big Dutchman family”, as Meerpohl calls his global company, will always remember Jack as the salesman with an eternal optimism and a simple (but unbeaten) customer-oriented sales philosophy, who took every opportunity to fire up his team with his “keep selling” mantra.

Three Big Dutchman trainees travel halfway around the world

Three Big Dutchman trainees are very enthusiastic about their foreign exchange internships.

“Every trainee who gets offered such a chance should take it“! Carolin Schlömer was absolutely thrilled when she recently returned from Malaysia where she completed a foreign internship. The young professional is currently enrolled in a dual-certification program alternating between classroom study at a technical college and on-the-job training at the Big Dutchman headquarters in Calveslage, Germany. Carolin had applied for one of the three foreign internships the livestock housing equipment supplier offered their trainees this year. And her application was successful: for six weeks, she moved her workplace from Germany to Shah Alam, close to Kuala Lumpur, where the Malaysian daughter company of the international market leader has its headquarters.

Very enthusiastic about their stay abroad are also the two other foreign trainees Britta Deux and Felix Ruholl. Trainee Ruholl also went to Malaysia, while Britta Deux completed her internship on the other side of the globe: in Holland, Michigan, USA.

Working in “Tulip City”

Here in “Tulip City”, as Holland, population of 35,000, is also known, is the home of the US-American Big Dutchman daughter company Big Dutchman Inc (BD Inc.). For the second time already, BD Inc. sponsored one of the successful participants of the coveted foreign internships. And, according to Britta Deux, they did it very well: the trainee from Germany had the chance to look into all departments, visited a layer farm equipped with BD products and accompanied her American colleagues on visits to suppliers.

The prospective business school graduate sees her future in the field of personnel development and was glad to be able to get a whiff of the “Human Resources” department at BD Inc. as well. “American application papers are completely anonymous, don’t contain a picture and with a maximum of two pages, are much shorter than German application papers. And job interviews are also much quicker”, summarises Deux some of the differences she encountered.

Versatile jobs

Felix Ruholl also was able to combine his vocational interest with the stay abroad: Already on day two the future mechanical engineer started setting up an engine test station for gear motors. In close cooperation with the Malaysian colleagues he organised the required testing material, clarified details such as delivery dates and delivery sites and established the power supply for the test. A nice side effect of the project was that Felix gained immediate insight into all departments.

No two foreign internships are alike: Carolin Schlömer on the other hand worked in the internal sales department and supported the Malaysian colleagues actively with their daily business. “My main task was to help with the realisation of a large project in Beijing”, summarises the young woman who combines her training at Big Dutchman with a college degree in economics about her interesting and versatile job abroad.

A great experience

As different as the job profiles of the trainees were, they still had several common denominators: in terms of collegiality, assistance and job diversity, the three globetrotters give their hosts excellent grades. And all three were also very enthusiastic about experiencing a different culture: “Looking beyond one’s own four walls is always worth the effort”! was the unanimous conclusion.

Next year, the housing equipment supplier will once again offer several foreign internships. There is a great deal of interest among the trainees. Since there is only a limited number of places available, the trainees have to present the jury with a convincing application which has to include not only an impressive performance both at school and at work but also a letter of motivation. However, this does not put anybody off: the next applicants are already waiting in the wings.

DLG-survey: animal housing supplier is awarded top marks

Big Dutchman has an outstanding reputation amongst agriculturalists in Germany. This is reflected by the latest image barometer of the German Agricultural Society (DLG). The renowned survey has recently been conducted for the 16th time nationwide. Thus the world’s greatest animal housing supplier for poultry and pig production is the first company in the trade to achieve the ranking of "outright image leader". The family-owned company from Vechta-Calveslage therefore finds itself on a par with traditional and renowned brands such as John Deere, Fendt, Claas, Bayer, BASF and the Volksbank establishments.

For the fifth time in succession Big Dutchman was awarded first place in the category of "Livestock Management Technology". For the first time the housing supplier achieved the impressive score of 98 out of 100 points which was by far the best result of all companies in this sector.

"This result is a reflection of the huge trust placed in us and, above all, an incentive to continue passionately with our work", commented Big Dutchman board member Bernd Meerpohl concerning publication of the results of the annual trade survey in the DLG-Test magazine.

The image barometer is compiled on the basis of detailed interviews with approximately 300 leading German agriculturalists. They were asked which company they assess as the best and which they evaluate as the most innovative. In addition the interviewer wanted to know which company has carried out the best and most creative promotion and which one maintains the best internet presence. In response to all four questions Big Dutchman achieved top position in the category of "Livestock Management Technology".
