SonoCheck: stress free pregnancy check
Good news for pig producers and their pigs: Big Dutchman’s newly developed SonoCheck is a device for automatic pregnancy checking of sows in group housing which reduces the stress of ultrasound scanning to a minimum. The core part of the system was developed especially for the Big Dutchman electronic sow feeding system (ESF) CallMatic Pro and can simply be mounted on to the ESF station. Every sow who enters the station is automatically scanned with an ultrasound scanner while she is eating thus markedly reducing the stress both for the sow and for the service personnel.
This is made possible by an animal-friendly compressed-air procedure which reduces the time for the entire pregnancy check to just 15 seconds. The ultrasound scans are recorded on video and are automatically analyzed by a special software. If the software does not come to a positive diagnosis, the farmer can examine the video subsequently on the computer.
SonoCheck has several advantages: thanks to the automatic process each sow can be checked several times. This increases the reliability of the diagnosis, prevents production losses and increases the number of litters per sow per year. SonoCheck furthermore helps to save valuable working time as the effort required to carry out a pregnancy check is significantly reduced. The system can be installed as mobile unit on all CallMatic Pro ESF stations, which keeps the purchase costs down.

EuroTier 2010: BigFarmNet links the entire farm
Pig house control from a single source piece
At last the confusing varieties of different computer software for pig houses are a thing of the past: with BigFarmNet, Big Dutchman is launching a completely new technology in which all house applications and controllers are integrated in just one single software. This concept allows the user to access all important functions easily and intuitively: be it feeding or climate, be it just one pig house or an entire farm complex – all controllers and computers are linked together and use the same software with the same user interface. The World Premiere of BigFarmNet will be at this year’s EuroTier.
BigFarmNet will save farm managers an incredible amount of time. “Whether it concerns user or master data, pig movements, temperature settings or feed curves: all data have to be entered only once”, observes BigFarmNet project manager Dr. Henning Müller. “Also, it does not matter which computer the entries are made from, as all settings are taken over directly by all other computers in the network. This is one of the many advantages of the new software“.
Another advantage is the maximum operational reliability it provides during everyday use. Each of the linked computers can operate on its own. Should an interruption of the connection occur, the software re-distributes all data without loss. “Alarm messages from the production and climate areas are displayed together. In case of trouble, the farm manager is able to react very quickly because he has direct access to all controls“, says Dr. Müller.
Entries can be made from one or several Windows-PCs, from the new Big Dutchman-717-Touchscreen-computer, or via mobile access from an iPhone or Blackberry. All changes, configurations and settings remain traceable. At the same time, user rights can be assigned variably based on the application or on the house.
The BigFarmNet operating concept is characterised by its simple menu structure, the concise design and the real-time visualisation. All systems are shown as 3-D animations in exactly the same manner as they are installed on the farm. All functions can be manually accessed via these 3-D images.
BigFarmNet is a very communicative technology and supports the standardised ISOagriNET interface. This way data can be exchanged with other computers. The communication can, of course, also be carried out via other interfaces.

Innovation awards for SonoCheck and QuigTag
Good news for Big Dutchman in the run-up to EuroTier 2010, the world’s leading exhibition for animal husbandry being held in Hanover, Germany, from 16 to 19 November 2010. After assessing 200 innovations submitted by EuroTier exhibitors, an international expert commission set up by the German Agricultural Society (DLG) has awarded three gold and 18 silver medals on the basis of strict criteria. The only Gold Medal in the important sector of pig management and feeding technology has thereby been awarded to Big Dutchman Pig Equipment GmbH.
The award-winning innovation is SonoCheck, a newly-developed device for automatic pregnancy checking of sows in group housing. Every sow that enters the Big Dutchman electronic sow feeding system (ESF) CallMatic Pro is automatically scanned with an ultrasound scanner. Thus SonoCheck helps to minimise working time as it requires much less effort to examine the sows. Moreover, it markedly reduces the stress for the animals.

A Silver Medal has been awarded to QuigTag: location symbols in the pig house aid the farmer in using the software of so called PDAs palmtop computers and considerably facilitate navigation. „The approach is well thought out“, the expert commission concluded. „Data entry is made easier by meaningful symbols; tiresome and time-consuming navigation from one menu level to the next is no longer necessary“. „Beyond that, the Big Dutchman solution also holds the promise to facilitate the mobile use of other programs.“

Leiden Lei appointed Area Sales Manager North China
Big Dutchman expands its sales force in China
Big Dutchman is pleased to announce the appointment of Leiden Lei as Area Sales Manager North China for the pig division. Leiden achieved his Bachelor Degree in husbandry from Huazhong Agriculture University, China, and he will be based at the Beijing sales office. Prior to joining Big Dutchman China, Leiden has worked with PIC China for the past 10 years and he has held various positions within PIC China, his last position being Sales Manager.
In his new role, Leiden will manage customer accounts in North China and develop new business within the area. Big Dutchman looks forward to Leiden joining its team. “His impeccable background coupled with his rich experience in the pig industry, will assist us with our plans of offering best support and available solutions to our customers”, said Mr. Brian McCawley, president of Big Dutchman China.
